About Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system that works your entire body, allowing you to achieve your highest potential in strength, flexibility, balance and control.  Joe Pilates developed the system in the early part of the 20th century and he has been called a “genius of the body”.

Why do Pilates?

Pilates will strengthen your body, fine-tune your body and help develop awareness of how your body works.  Maintaining a strong and healthy body will not only help prevent injury but will enhance everything you do, from basic routine activities such as cleaning and gardening to acrobatics and high level sports.

Pilates has proven itself a useful form of exercise for so many decades because it has a way of addressing everyone’s unique needs.  Everyone has their own particular genetics and body types, everyone has varying goals and needs, and everyone has been through life events that impact the way their bodies move.  Yet no matter what age or condition, Pilates has a way of directing EVERY BODY toward its optimum form and balance.

More on the history of Pilates:

An article written by Robert Wernick, a student of Joe’s who also happened to be a journalist, helps shed some light on the beginnings of Pilates.  He wrote this article for Sports Illustrated in 1962. See the full article here.
